Syene: A Strategic Fortress and Trading Hub
Biblical references point to a city named Syene (sometimes spelled Seveneh), which was a significant settlement in ancient Egypt. This city was strategically located on the eastern bank of the Nile River, at the southern frontier of the country. Its importance stemmed from its role as a military outpost, a customs station, and a bustling center for trade, particularly with the lands to the south, such as Nubia.
The prophet Ezekiel, in the Old Testament, provides one of the most well-known biblical mentions of Syene:
